In 2020, BonHydroponics Curaçao began transforming a former car scrapyard in Sta. Catharina into a sustainable agricultural site. The 1.7-hectare location was remediated and redesigned to become a productive Kunuku, complete with its own water supply, food forest, and poultry. Over the years, a dedicated team of volunteers helped shape the land into a foundation for local food production.

In August 2023, construction began on a modern tropical greenhouse. By December 2024, the 5,500 m² facility was completed, and after a short testing period, operations officially started on February 4. The first harvests were delivered by the end of March.
The greenhouse is fully circular and designed to produce up to 1.3 million crops per year. Leafy vegetables and other fresh produce are grown daily on 3,500 m² of hydroponic beds. Products are packaged for consumers and also supplied unpackaged to the hospitality sector.
This initiative is locally rooted and community driven. Around 25 families from Curaçao and the Netherlands have invested in the project, helping make it accessible to people with a healthy vision for the future.

The soil was carefully remediated, with demolition waste removed and the terrain leveled to support hydroponic cultivation. Every head of lettuce grown reduces the island’s dependence on imports and strengthens food resilience.
