BRANCH Coral Foundation – Restoring Reefs, Protecting Curaçao’s Future

The BRANCH Coral Foundation plays an important role in safeguarding Curaçao’s coral reefs through hands-on restoration, education, and community involvement. The organization focuses on strengthening coral ecosystems that are essential for coastal protection, tourism, fisheries, and the island’s cultural identity.

BRANCH Coral Foundation uses coral gardening to help rebuild damaged reefs. Healthy coral fragments are grown in underwater nurseries until they are strong enough to be outplanted onto natural reefs. This method directly supports global goals such as SDG 14 Life Below Water, SDG 13 Climate Action, and SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production.

The foundation includes coral nurseries with more than 100 square meters of thriving coral, over 4,000 outplant events each year, and a coral survival rate above 90 percent. These results show that large-scale recovery is possible when the community, volunteers, and partners participate in protecting Curaçao’s marine environment.

BRANCH also inspires both local and international communities to join restoration efforts. Volunteers, especially divers, are encouraged to participate in nursery maintenance, outplanting activities, and awareness events such as the Coral Happy Hour Fundraiser. Educational outreach is a central part of the foundation’s mission.

By combining conservation, research, and community participation, BRANCH Coral Foundation demonstrates how local action can protect Curaçao’s reefs, support climate resilience, and secure healthy oceans for future generations.
