Prevention First, Health for Everyone
Good health starts before people get sick.
Sentro pa Salú Públiko, also known as Salú Publiko, is Curaçao’s public prevention center focused on protecting and improving community health through early intervention, education, and accessible preventive care. The center was established by Stichting Primary Care Curaçao as the island’s first dedicated public prevention facility, working in close collaboration with general practitioners and the government.
All services are offered free of charge, removing financial barriers to essential preventive healthcare.
Salú Publiko focuses primarily on the prevention and management of chronic conditions that have a major impact on quality of life on Curaçao. This includes care and guidance for people with prediabetes, diabetes type 2, cardiovascular risk factors, and older adults.
Participants receive education on nutrition, physical activity, and lifestyle choices, combined with regular health monitoring. This approach helps people manage their condition early and avoid complications later in life.
This work directly supports SDG 3 Good Health & Well‑Being, with strong emphasis on prevention rather than treatment alone.
Since its launch, Salú Publiko has continued to grow. In addition to its original locations in Otrobanda and Bandabou, a third site opened in Bandariba (Montaña), improving access to preventive care for more communities.
By expanding geographically, Salú Publiko reduces inequality in access to care and strengthens local health resilience across Curaçao.
A key strength of Salú Publiko is its close coordination with general practitioners. Through a digital information system, doctors remain informed about their patients’ progress, ensuring continuity of care and better long‑term outcomes.
In addition to in‑person services, Salú Publiko shares accessible health knowledge through public campaigns, educational materials, and community outreach, supporting SDG 4 Quality Education in a health context.
Chronic diseases place a heavy burden on individuals, families, and the healthcare system. Preventive, community‑based care helps people stay healthier longer and reduces long‑term costs for society.
Sentro pa Salú Públiko shows how public health policy, prevention, and partnerships can translate directly into everyday impact for residents, strengthening Curaçao’s path toward sustainable development.
