Stichting Uniek Curaçao protects nature, culture, and community across the island
Stichting Uniek Curaçao is a long-standing volunteer organization dedicated to safeguarding Curaçao’s natural and cultural heritage. The foundation operates independently without subsidies or commercial entrance fees, relying instead on donations, contributions for specific goals, and fundraising efforts to continue its mission.
Since its establishment in 1991 and formal launch as a foundation in 1992, Uniek Curaçao has worked to make the island’s special places more accessible to both residents and visitors. Its guiding motto, “Konosé bo isla” (know your island), encourages the community to reconnect with Curaçao’s landscapes, history, and natural treasures.
The organization maintains and improves approximately 30 natural areas, including walking routes and nature sites across the island. These efforts support neighborhood development, tourism with a sustainability focus, and outdoor education for youth. Schools, trainees, volunteers, and community groups take part in cleanups, maintenance activities, and excursions that help protect the environment while strengthening community ties.
With an open, collaborative structure, the foundation welcomes anyone who wants to contribute to nature conservation, environmental education, or cultural preservation. Books, reference materials, and tools are offered to volunteers who work for the island’s benefit.
These ongoing efforts support SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 13 Climate Action, SDG 14 Life Below Water, and SDG 15 Life on Land, helping Curaçao grow as a resilient island that values its nature, culture, and people.
