The City Nature Challenge (CNC) is a global community science event that invites cities around the world to explore and document local wildlife. What began in 2016 as a friendly competition between Los Angeles and San Francisco has grown into one of the world’s largest biodiversity initiatives, engaging tens of thousands of people each year.

The Challenge takes place every year at the end of April. Participants photograph or record wild plants, animals, fungi, and signs of wildlife and upload their observations to iNaturalist, contributing valuable data used in biodiversity research and conservation planning. In 2025, more than 400 cities are expected to participate worldwide, creating a global snapshot of nature in urban environments.

The event unfolds in two phases:

1. Observation Days – A four‑day bioblitz where participants capture images and sounds of wildlife.
2. Identification Days – Community members help identify observations online.

By participating, Curaçao contributes directly to understanding how nature thrives in our neighborhoods, parks, and coastlines. The Challenge supports SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 14: Life Below Water, and SDG 15: Life on Land, promoting awareness of biodiversity and encouraging community involvement in protecting the environment.

Everyone can join: families, students, nature lovers, and complete beginners. A smartphone camera is enough to take part. The City Nature Challenge once per year.
