FUSE Caribbean turns plastic waste into new opportunities for the region

FUSE Caribbean is a circular innovation initiative built to tackle the plastic waste challenge across the Caribbean. The concept was created by The Great Plastic Bake Off (GPBO) in the Netherlands and expanded to the region through a partnership with Kooyman, Curaçao’s long-standing family-owned retailer. Together, they bring green technology and practical solutions to communities that want to transform plastic waste into valuable products.

At the heart of the movement is the FUSE Kitchen – a small-scale, local production space where plastic waste is turned into durable building materials and furniture. These products can be sold in Kooyman stores, creating a local circular economy and reducing dependence on imported materials. The FUSE model supports entrepreneurs, provides hands-on training, and helps communities take ownership of their waste challenges.

FUSE Caribbean works on three levels:

Ecological impact

The initiative creates real solutions for a cleaner planet by preventing plastic from ending up in landfills, oceans, and nature.

Economic impact

FUSE Kitchens introduce new business models for local entrepreneurs, generating employment opportunities and strengthening the regional green economy.

Social impact

Communities learn how to handle plastic differently, raising awareness and encouraging people to contribute to a healthier living environment.

This work supports SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 13: Climate Action, by transforming waste into durable materials, reducing environmental harm, and opening new opportunities for local innovation.

FUSE Caribbean represents a growing network of partners committed to a cleaner, more resilient Caribbean—one community at a time.
