Mangroves are more than trees. They are protectors of coastlines, homes for wildlife, and quiet warriors in the fight against climate change. In Curaçao, mangroves help reduce erosion, absorb carbon dioxide, and filter water naturally — all while supporting the island’s biodiversity and food security (SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 14: Life Below Water).
This initiative focuses on restoring mangrove ecosystems and involving the community in the process. From planting red mangrove plugs to training outdoor professionals, the goal is to reconnect people with nature and build resilience for the future.

🌱 Goals and Actions:

  • Produce 1,440 red mangrove plugs (MangPods) for restoration and education.
  • Conduct a baseline study of current mangrove areas and assess their ecological value.
  • Use GIS data and local stories to understand past mangrove coverage and potential.
  • Share collected data publicly within 6 months to support research and education.
  • Engage the community — including students, teachers, and outdoor professionals — through planting events, education, and social media.
  • Provide industry-specific training for outdoor guides and travel experience providers.
  • Promote sustainable coastal protection and responsible use of wetlands.
  • Develop tools to support professionals working in nature-based tourism and conservation.
