Social and Economic Council – Advice for a Sustainable and Balanced Future
The Social and Economic Council (SER) plays a key role in shaping Curaçao’s socio-economic policy. As a permanent advisory body, the SER provides guiding advice to the government and Parliament, focusing on a broad concept of prosperity. This concept emphasizes not only economic progress but also social well-being, a healthy living environment, and sustainable development. This vision aligns with international goals, including SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 10 Reduced Inequality, and SDG 13 Climate Action.
In its advice, the SER considers various objectives that contribute to a stable and future-proof society. These objectives include balanced economic growth, a strong labor market with broad participation, sound government finances, and fair income distribution. Themes such as a sustainable social system and accessible healthcare are also part of this approach. One of the core tasks of the Social and Economic Council (SER) is to create public support for socio-economic policy. This takes place in a tripartite format, where employers’ organizations, employee representatives, and independent members jointly discuss important topics. Depending on the theme, the SER also invites civil society organizations to contribute their expertise and perspectives. This approach encourages open dialogue, collaboration, and shared understanding, which ultimately helps resolve local issues with broad support.
The SER also serves as a platform for discussing relevant socio-economic issues. Sometimes this occurs as part of a formal advisory process, sometimes in the form of explorations and agenda setting. These discussions create space for new insights and allow trends, risks, and opportunities for society to be identified in a timely manner.
With its recommendations, consultation platform, and connecting role, the SER makes a valuable contribution to the development of Curaçao. Its focus on well-being, sustainability, solidarity, and collaboration forms the basis for policy choices that strengthen society in the long term.
