Curaçao imports around 90% of its food, yet local farmers continue to grow fresh produce across the island, often unnoticed. The Hidden Green Movement is changing that. This grassroots initiative brings producers closer to consumers and encourages people to consciously choose local products, contributing to a healthier and more resilient society.
🌱 A Movement Rooted in Connection
The Hidden Green Movement began when Berber, a passionate activist born in Curaçao with a background in permaculture and photography, met Reina, who was eager to invest her time in social projects. Berber had long envisioned a way to give visibility to local farmers. When she shared the idea with Reina, the movement was born.
🎯 Mission: Visibility and Participation
The Hidden Green Movement is designed to be inclusive and accessible. It runs as a one-year awareness campaign, spotlighting a different farmer each month. Through photography, interviews, videos, and reports from the field, the campaign showcases the agricultural culture of Curaçao.
This content is shared across social media, the website, local media outlets, and even in supermarkets and restaurants. A recognizable logo helps consumers identify local products on shelves, making it easier to support homegrown food.
🧠 Knowledge Sharing and Community Engagement
The movement also includes a news blog where farmers, restaurants, vendors, scientists, and policymakers share insights and experiences. Consumers participate by buying local products and becoming ambassadors for the movement.
👁️ Vision: Seeing Is Believing
Many people are surprised to learn that food is grown locally in Curaçao. The Hidden Green Movement aims to make this production visible and valued. By highlighting local agriculture, the initiative fosters pride, awareness, and sustainable choices.
